Make sure that all Canadians can access and afford the medicines they need; protect workplace benefit plans; and be wise about spending tax dollars. A new national plan should:
Establish a list of the medicines that everyone should be covered for, through workplace plans for those who have a plan, and by government for those who don't. This list of drugs would be based on scientific evidence and include expensive drugs and drugs for rare disorders.
Focus the use of tax dollars on those who lack any sort of drug coverage today, and keep the costs down by working together with insurance providers to negotiate lower drug prices. This is the best way to help people without wasting tax dollars and putting other health benefits at risk.
